The Dassault-Breguet / Dornier Alpha Jet is a Franco-German twin-engine, two-seat jet trainer and light attack aircraft developed jointly by Dassault-Breguet of France and Dornier Flugzeugwerke of Germany, produced from 1973 to 1991. Both the French Armée de l'Air and German Luftwaffe inducted the type in 1979, and it became the principal lead-in fast-jet trainer for both nations across the following decades. As a Franco-German cooperation programme, the Alpha Jet predated the multinational Panavia Tornado (UK / Germany / Italy) and Eurofighter Typhoon (UK / Germany / Italy / Spain). Production reached 511 airframes — 175 French, 175 German, and the balance for export — and the platform remains in active service with multiple operators globally as of 2026.

The airframe is a twin-engine, high-wing tandem-cockpit design measuring 40 ft (12.3 m) in length with a 30-ft (9.1 m) wingspan. Empty weight is around 7,400 lb and maximum take-off weight 17,800 lb. Power comes from two SNECMA-Turbomeca Larzac 04-C6 / 04-C20 turbofans rated at roughly 3,200 lbf each — modest individually, but the twin-engine layout delivers good combined performance and a safety margin. Top speed is Mach 0.86 (around 640 mph at altitude), combat radius is typically 350 nmi with external fuel tanks, and service ceiling reaches 50,000 ft.
